Reconsideration of 1975 Finals

9/4/1976.  Reconsideration of 1975 Finals.  The 9/14/1975 rule change will not be applied retroactively.  Therefore RHB graciously relinquishes the 7/16/1976 decision to Tiger Williams, who will reign as 1975 Golden Mallet.  However, it has ben noted that Mr. Williams won his title “the Easy Way”, an achievement akin to breaking the home run record in a smaller ballpark.

Entered But Not Verified

8/29/76 [TDB’s handwriting]

Entered, but not verified by TDB and RHB. Bob and Don were both shooting for the last two wickets when Martha LeM came from 11 to the aid of her husband contrary to the spirit and ideals of the camaraderie of the Golden Mallet. If her motivation had been that she merely did not want Bob to win that it would have been understood and applauded by all. But it was obvious she wanted her husband to win. This action is especially disheartening to those of us who have done so much to further the cause of women’s equality by allowing them equal treatment on the field of play.

Accordingly by action in Council, Martha both is hereby censured. Further she is barred from holding the Golden Mallot during this year.

[RHB’s hand]1976 results over what would appear to be tie. However it must be noted that a protest was entered on 8/29/76 score by DBLeM for getting help from Martha. Accordingly the Board considered as qualifying score in that game. Quote as you sew [sic] so shall you reap!” “A husband is not responsible for his chattels [sic]”.

8/1/77

[KB’s hand?]Quorum of the board of directors of the Golden Mallet has ruled that the 1976 award will be held jointly by D LeMessurier and Tiger “Ed” Williams. This is to serve as a valuable lesson to those who would interfere during the course of play. C s o t p h.

1975 Score Review

7/16/1976 – the 1975 scores were reviewed. RHB, TDB, & Tiger Williams were the only (including females) players who were qualified for the Golden Mallet by playing at least 5 games against 3 different players!  On further review Tiger only played in 4 games; thus the golden mallet is again awarded to founder RHB with a rather mediocre average score of 15.  Second place would go to TRB  with a credible 14.

9/14/1975 Rule Change – # of players

Rule 5 is amended as follows:

A minimum of three 2 other players must be engaged in any game for it to count.  This rule may also be known as the “you can’t ‘use’ grandma anymore award rule” TDB, HJB, DLeM, RHB by phone proxy. CSOTPH!

Golden Mallet Lore

[Author unknown, may be KJB or RHB.  The precise date of this document is unknown.  It appears in the book following the “International Women’s Year Award” entry and, therefore, is given a date in late September, 1975]

Golden Mallet Lore – The question of cheating comes up from time to time, an outgrowth of the intensely competitive nature of the game.  The Council has decided in  its wisdom not to rule officially on this question.  However, past Golden Mallets have unofficially confided that cheating has been practiced, from time to time.  The key here is not to be caught in the act of cheating.  Anyone caught cheating must, of course, resign from the game immediately, in shame.

1975 International Women’s Year Award

In recognition of the special significance of this year to the weaker sex we award the Golden Mallet Woman of the Year Award – 1975 to Martha LeMessurier for her “nice try.” Needless to say there will be no further awards of this type.

Golden Mallet Lore

[Date is believed to be around July 1, 1973, author unknown]

  • Prior to the commencement of games wherein former or current Golden Mallets are the only players, it is customary for all of these players to raise and cross mallets, in acknowledgement of shared, hard-won glory.  During such games, it is also customary to recognize historic shots with a blast on the “Horn of the Golden Mallet”.  These games are called “Penultimate Play”.
  • It is well-known among regular players that former and current Golden Mallets are vengeful.  Indeed, it is said that “a Golden Mallet never forgets or forgives being hit into the tall uncut”.

[Editor’s Note 2011 – it has become custom for all players, GM-winners or not, to cross mallets at the beginning of a game.  Since approximately the mid-90s, this has been a signal that the game is “official” and point-bearing]

The Case of the Lifted Ball (or “the maple leaf meeting”)

With players [incomprehensible] noted on opposite page, it was discovered that DCB had, through plays of two opponents, been secreting his own ball behind his generously wide bottom, thereby allegedly preventing it being hit by the opposition.

Defendant objects and protests that all shots by opponents widely missed his [incomprehensible] and carefully noted Maple Leaf Mother.  Game broke up in a wild riot of malicious charges and counter charges!  Early ruling requested of “GM” Supreme Court.

1. HJB 2. DCB 3. Betty Beeby 4. P Beeby

[The following appears to be a ruling from the Court of the GM]

* Protest – KJB and TDB protest this alleged game by HJB for: 1) throwing mallet at his ball and stopping it after typical bad shot, 2) going through #6 when his ball was not all the way through aforesaid wicket, 3) other nefarious conduct unbecoming a contestant for Golden Mallet honors especially so considering his seniority (senility?)

It is recommended that HJB play 2 games with his eyes closed.  (Small penalty because that is his normal method!) (BS – HJB)

TDB (C.J.)
Concurring in opinion: KJB (J)

Protest #2 – HJB By seniority T.I.Q! (nuff sed!)

ROS Gene Kornegay drove HJB and DLeM (ranking Colfax members) into the lake in the same game!  Consideration was given to awarding him the Special Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Golden Mallet Competition, but this game was rejected by the ex-officio board because it was Colfax members hit in the lake.
