The Order of the Arbor

Martha Williams is hereby awarded “the Golden Mallet Order of the Arbor.”  On this day she caused to be planted a new cedar tree at teh base of #13 to replace one which, according to some evidence, had been destroyed by person or persons unknown.  It had been in precarious condition.  Some would say (not this commentator, of course) that she did this to atone for her almost singlehanded destruction in 1987 of the infrastructure surrounding old #5.  One must admit that she owned up to her responsibility in the best tradition of the Mallet after a letter of censure was issued.  At that time there was a raging debate (two letters and a phone call!) as to whether old #5 should be artificially repaired by a tree surgeon.  The Board of Directors wisely decided that nature should take its course.  If this tree lives then the area shall become known as Martha’s Vineyard.  Done at Bellaire, MI this Arbor Day of Antrim Cty, 1988.
